LOVE the Mod Podging coaster idea, so I decided to try it tonight. I did not use a tutorial, I just went ahead and thought I could do it on my own. HA!
I am making a set of coasters for a friend of mine as a belated wedding gift. The idea came up when I was in Michael's tonight and saw some Owl themed scrapbook paper. I knew I could mod podge paper onto ceramic tile, so I thought why the hell not! FYI, she LOVES Owls as if you couldn't guess already.
I applied Mod Podge on the tile and then laid the paper neatly on top. GREAT! Looks fabulous. My mistake? I didn't wait for it to dry before I added a layer of Mod Podge OVER the paper. When I started seeing the bubbles, I thought, "Yup, you should've waited for it to dry." BOGUS!
Totally OK! I just need to head to Michael's again at lunch tomorrow and purchase more sheets. Luckily they are having a 4/$1 sale on loose scrapbook paper. I knew I should've started on the other sheet print I bought!
I will post pictures of the finished product over the weekend.
But...on a BRIGHTER note. I had an "aha" moment today. I just couldn't stand the fact that I wouldn't have a sewing machine for another few weeks so I walked over to the Singer 237 and decided to really look it over and make sure it isn't out of alignment. I know I have broken needles before and never needed to get the machine serviced (newer machines, of course). Low and behold after playing around for about 5 - 10 minutes I realized that the thread in the tension dial was incorrect. Once I threaded it correctly, the machine now sews perfect again!
Unfortunately it is too late for me to sew or craft right now. 5:45am comes awfully early.
NIGHT friends and family! <3

Sewing Machine Blues
For the past few days I have been trying to put together a trainer for Z baby, by utilizing a prefold and some 1" FOE. Unfortunately, it did not go so well.

Yup, that is a broken needle, people. And no, placing in a new one is not going to solve my issue. My new issue is the fact that I have now placed my sewing machine out of alignment which is going to cost me money (I don't have) to get it serviced. This machine cost me $50, service fees are double that. NOT worth it! I am officially unable to sew until I can get my Husqvarna Viking Lily back from Utah. *sigh*
It makes me sad. I won't be able to finish the girls blankets by xmas, either. :( I will now go crawl into a hole and will peep my head out to see if it is safe.

Fabric...Fabric Galore!!
Take a look at what I got in the mail today.

Happy 6th Wedding Anniversary to me!
This is uber sweet of an old friend of mine to send this to me. Thanks Pat! I can't believe it. They are all so beautiful. I can't tell which is my favorite, they are all so cute! I just see so many projects sifting in my head. So far I see sandwich bags, snack bags, and lunch napkins. Now I need to hunt down some tutorials to see what other cute things I can do with this fabric. The bat fabric (lower left hand corner) is definitely going toward something for me. ;) BATS!
For the mod in me, look what I picked up the other day for 99 cents a yard at Ikea. Yes, that's right, you heard it....IKEA!

I bought this with the thought of a dress for Z-baby. The colors are great for her skin type. Not to mention the dress I have picked out will rock with a big ol' flower at her mid section.
Yay me, yay sewing. Yay Pat (miss you, love you, kisses!) for her contribution to my hobby. I <3 fabric. I think I am addicted. :O

Wet bag me please
Yes, I yet again modified a tutorial I found (http://oh-nuh-uh.com/?p=85). This time it was for a wet bag! My dear cousin B mentioned she wanted a wet bag with a pocket, so I had to try it.
Square right?

Well check out the inside...

This was a test bag, but I had to think of someone when making a wet bag. So I thought of my friend Alexis who just recently had a birthday. AND has hinted to me that she wanted another wet bag from me. Since I had material that was boyish, already washed, and cut, I decided to just cut PUL to the same size as well as a layer of rip stop nylon.
In the second picture you can barely see it, but there is a layer of rip stop nylon hanging there. It is a small size, it can only hold two diapers. One compartment is for dry, the other for dirty. I can't wait for her to test this out and give me feedback. I already see improvements coming.
Tutorial was easy. I like pictures because I do better on visuals than reading. Call it the ADHD...no, seriously. It was not too hard to change it up to add a sheet of nylon to make the pocket. I am thrilled that it came out satisfactory.
Now, let's see what Ms A thinks of it!
Happy (belated) Birthday present Ms Alexis!!

Reusable Sandwich/Snack Bag Test
Tonight I was curious about a sandwich/snack bag tutorial I found over the weekend. I had the materials, so why not! I found the tutorial at this address:
http://frenchsleepdeprivationstudy.blogspot.com/2009/06/snack-bag-tutorial.html.
I might add that it was fairly easy. I did not have to read the directions all the way. I decided to do a modification using a snap instead of the button and elastic.
This was a complete test run. I used fabric that had already been washed, a potato chip bag that a friend gave me (thanks Alexis!), and a borrowed snap plier and snaps. I must say it came out better than I expected. My first try at ironing no sew adhesive was a total fail. I had the heat setting up too high, so the mylar packaging completely folded and melted. All it took was to review the tutorial and know that I need to be on a low heat setting. Once I got that cleared up, then I was off and running again.
Check it out!

Now the real test. The 5 year old using it tomorrow in her lunch. It does fit a sandwich, but husband and I realized tonight that the snap may not be such a great idea! It's OK, next one can be a better, darker fabric with a button and some elastic to keep it closed. ;)

This and That...
I have a lot of projects lined up. So far this is what I have going:
1. Minky blankets for my daughters
2. Reusable snack baggies and sandwich bags made out of tshirts and mylar packaging
3. Cloth napkins
4. Trainers for my potty learning 16 month old (17 months tomorrow!)
I have my work cut out for me. I attempted a trainer using a prefold, I just need snap pliers and snaps to complete it. I do not want to use elastic, although, I may have to depending on the test with the youngest.
As time permits, I will be posting all of my projects!

Cherry Skirt Size 6
Wow...absolutely wow! I impressed myself. Three nights ago I sat looking at facebook and thinking I REALLY need to do something different. I glanced over at my sewing machine and thought, "I have all this nice material that is sitting there doing nothing, why not get a skirt pattern out and start sewing?" So I did...
I grabbed my McCall's M5696 pattern and reviewed it. I chose option A. Since I used cherry fabric, I wanted to make sure that the cherries were sitting up right, and not all jollywhopped and uneven. I did modify the pattern to reflect this. Instead of one big piece for the front skirt, I used the back skirt pattern to create 4 pieces. However, I did cut out the little notches that were for the front skirt, to ensure that I matched the pieces correctly. I had a few challenges, such as sewing the waistband before the zipper and the zipper install itself. All in all, it came out pretty good!
I am glad I went slowly this time to make sure I didn't mess up. I have very few mistakes on this skirt, and I am really proud to show it off. The oldest lit up like a xmas tree this morning when she saw it, so she wore it to school. Nothing says, "I love you" like your daughter wearing something you made. <3

Baby Crinkle Ribbon Square
Last night I had a baby crinkle blanket tutorial staring at me in the face. It is not a large blanket, just a small one that is easy to grap with a babies hands. Not sure what possessed me to start this at 11pm last night after getting home from a friends Memorial weekend party. But, I did. Was I tired, yes! And very energetic...
I got all my pieces tog
ether by looking around the house to see what I had stashed somewhere. I used a ribbon that was wrapped around some Liz Claiborne pajamas my mom sent me, as well as some ribbon my kid uses to torture the cat with (he chases her around the house if it is dragging on the floor). The third piece of ribbon came from a roll of ribbon I purchased to help decorate a Valentine's box project for my daughter's school. I grabbed an empty baby wipes bag that I had laying around (waiting to be thrown away, apparently). And then I grabbed some of my Robert Kaufman Chirp Hearts Pink 100% cotton fabric.
Now, if I wasn't so tired this might have turned out REALLY great the first time. Instead, I continued on to make sure I finished this in a short time. I cut out my squares on the fabric and baby wipes baggie. I then sewed the baby wipes to the backside of the fabric. I cut my ribbon pieces and pinned them on the backside of the fabric where the baby wipes bag is and baste stitched. Then I grabbed the other square and put the front side fabric pieces together and sewed all around the square leaving an opening to bring the inside out. Again, I stress that I was tired but energetic...
As I flipped the inside out, I realized the ribbon was on the WRONG side. It is now on the inside of the square. *blank stare* Tired, and it hit me that I definitely did not need to be touching a sewing machine at this point, either. I knew I could fix it, and decided I would. So I grabbed my little seam ripper tool and proceeded to take the seam out from all away around the bag. When my husband walked in the room to go to bed at midnight is when I decided to put it down and finish the next day...
Today is a great day. Did a best friend drink and bracelet exchange with my oldest daughter, and then took the girls to the local free splash pond. Once I got home I was in the mood to sew. I picked up the crinkle square and ripped the seam out. This time while ripping the seam wasn't nearly as difficult as it was the night before. In fact, what was taking me 20 minutes when I was tired, only took about 2 mins when I was awake. Seam out, ribbons pinned on front side, basted seam, placed right sides together and basted again. Flipped it inside out, zig zagged stitch the outer edges and voila! Finished product:

I am quite impressed with this. Check out this zig zag stitch. Unfortunately, the ONLY setting my Singer sewing machine does. I can't wait to get my Husqvarna back!
Here is the tutorial I was staring at: http://www.joyshope.com/2009/05/baby-crinkle-square-tutorial.html
The only thing I did was look at all the photos. Completely easy for a beginner, especially one that has a bad habit of NOT reading directions. I am trying to read directions though, that is why I am starting this little blog project for me to reform my sewing skills. If I can start from scratch, just do the basics, photo journal and blog it, then I can go back and review what I had done and learn from it. G'nite!

Pffft
Tonight I decided to do some sewing on the Kimono style booties for my youngest daughter. I had everything cut out from my Robert Kaufman fabric, so I just needed to sew the pieces together. While I was putting the pieces together my oldest comes in and sticks her face right close to the machine on one side, with a pile of clothes to send off to a cousin next to me and is about to topple over. Then she decides to move to the other side with her head over my shoulder and kicking my sewing box and another machine on the floor. I love that my oldest is curious about what I am doing, but it was just the wrong time for her to come and watch me! Once I scooted her off to prepare for bed, I went back at it. Finished one side of the shoe and realized something...I sewed the wrong side to the shoe!
Yes, I had a distraction and did not pay attention to what I was doing. This is what the blog is for, is it not? To tell everyone what a horrible sewer I am and the obstacles I face every day to try and make something with my own two hands!
Sewing the wrong side to the shoe left me a little peeved so I took my stitch snippers and removed the seam. I placed the fabric back on to the correct sides and sewed a shoe. I only got to one shoe, though. I looked at it and thought, "This is NOT going to stay on her foot." The back of the shoe is a lazy lip. The shoe itself will go on like a slipper, but won't stay on the heel. Purchasing the pattern for these shoes is looking a lot better at this moment.
*sigh*

Rise of the mama pad...
As I mentioned earlier I am doing mama pads. Yes, I am being brave and love the odd looks from my friends. I know they all think I am nuts. It's OK, at least I entertain them. But, after buying two and trying them out. I decided I had to make some to save money on buying disposables or paying someone $9+ for each mama pad. So the searching started...
I was utterly clueless when I started with the mama pads. I did tons of searches for days on materials I needed to use. I found a free mama pad tutorial at tinybirdsorganics.com, but it did not include the pattern. I noticed the materials needed are not readily available in the local fabric stores. I was sad for a minute, but many more searches made me realize I could use 100% cotton terry and make my own cut out pattern. So I went on a hunt...
Since I *knew* that I would be messing it up the first time, I decided to buy some cheap fabrics. I ran over to Hobby Lobby and bought a yard of red 100% cotton flannel. I looked at their terry, but it was incredibly thin and would take many layers before it was absorbent enough. Even though I will annihilate my first or second pad, I still wanted something more absorbent since I plan on using the same material to make backup soakers for my daughters cloth diapers. Walmart had a crap selection, too. I then went to Joann's and they had a decent selection of 100% cotton terry. So I got a yard of medium thickness terry and it was around $5 for the yard. Cheap enough for me!
So last week I started out on my sewing adventures with the mama pads. Let me tell you how excited I was to start out. I had the material, I had the sewing machine that I purchased from craiglists for $50 from a woman who was moving out of state (If only I had my Husqvarna Lily!). I found a small pantyliner pattern (http://sites.google.com/site/shewhorunsintheforest/008) and decided to lengthen it. And I thought I was ready...
So exciting! Once I had my paper cut outs I took my flannel and cut two pieces, and then rolled my terry three times to create a thick enough layer. I was jazzed at this point and couldn't stop. I wanted to do more (addicting as some would say). So I went over to the serger and serged around my terry. Great! Doesn't look bad, serger is OK and doesn't seem too frazzled by the fluffy material. Then I sewed on the layer of terry onto one of the flannel pieces. Criss cross stitch down the middle...OK, this is crooked. No worries, it is my first one after all! My next stitching was a straight stitch around the layer of terry to the flannel. Yes, definitely doesn't look swell now. Oh well, I thought. I can absolutely do this again, it isn't that bad! I took my other piece of flannel and pinned it against the other piece and sewed around the edges to leaving an open space. Haha, yes I did leave the open space :P I flipped the materials inside out so I could assess what I have done. Don't laugh...
Voila! Inside out and completely narrow...too narrow to place any snaps on the wings. Oy vey...I need MORE practice:

Go ahead and laugh, but it isn't too bad! Yes, I left it unfinished until I know how to fix it or rework it into another pad. I just realized that I can't believe people when they say it is an easy pattern. For someone like me who doesn't know how to work the gadgets on a sewing machine, just knows how to sew a straight line, it isn't that easy! I plan on taking sewing classes when I actually have some money. But, until then, I am learning all of this on my own with google as my friend. :)

Projects
I have a few projects I have started and will be starting soon. The ones currently being done are mama pads and baby booties. My projects I plan to start are training pants and diapers. Diapers, probably not so much as my 1 year old is getting bigger and has enough already. Unless husband decides we can get pregnant again! Yea, doubt it.
Mama pads:
So, mama pads. Great idea, especially if you are looking to save money. I am tired of filling the land fills myself, so I thought why not try mama pads. I bought two of them to try and I actually like them better. Reason is because it contours to the body and you don't feel like you have paper between your legs. I am NOT one to wear tampons as they are not comfortable to me. I completely thought I would get grossed out, but I hadn't. I am absolutely a type of person that would, too. But, it isn't any different than taking care of my own child's butt! Blood or poop, you figure what you can tolerate.
Baby booties:
I found an adorable pattern for some baby shoes. they are called Kimono style baby booties and I about died from cuteness! I was just doing another random search on google and found the design. It was someone selling the pattern for the shoes. Of course me and my 'gotta have free' mindset, I did another search and found a free pattern. I was elated.
I try to do a little sewing, nightly, after the kids have gone to bed. It helps me relax and feel creative. Even if I do not get very far. The other projects will come, but for right now I want to focus on these two.

Introduction and Merging
OK, so I am finally creating a blog for all my mis-adventures in sewing. I have been sewing since I was a little girl, but not consistently. Now that I have two children of my own, I felt it was time to start sewing again! Sure, sounds easy...No, it isn't and don't ever think sewing is easy. It is only easy the more you know.
Because of my many failures at sewing, I decided I needed to start over. Learn from the beginning and slow down in the process. This blog is about my attempts at being a pro seamstress (and honestly, I do laugh at the thought).
About me: I am just a mother of two daughters, married to a wonderful man. I am nothing special, and I will never claim to be perfect. I will always admit when I am wrong...OK sometimes. I like to do many things, but only get a chance to do a few. Hobbies do include; computers, sewing, and my children. I have more, but why waste space?!
I am currently merging all my info from a different blog that had the incorrect title in the URL. Another thing about me is that I attempt to be a perfectionist.
Now, on to the show...
